- Juventus triggered Gonzalo Higuain’s £76m Napoli release clause
- Argentine striker arrived in Turin to rapturous welcome from Juve fans
- Higuain transfer could set wheels in motion on number of deals
Gonzalo Higuain has touched down in Turin to begin the next phase of his career as Juventus’s £76m man.
With most of the summer talk around the Italian giants centering on the future of French midfielder Paul Pogba, Juve reminded the football world of their own clout by paying a huge fee to recruit striker Higuain.
The 28-year-old will be paid a net salary of £6.3million per year after agreeing terms on a five-year contract that sees him end a three-year association with Napoli.
Gonzalo Higuain gives the thumbs-up after arriving in Turin following his move to Juventus
Two-times European champions Juve used their Twitter account to welcome their marquee capture, posting a picture of the smiling former Real Madrid man arriving in the city, with the message, a mix of Italian and Spanish, ‘ECCOLO, BienvenidoPipita’ – translated as ‘here he is, welcome Pipita’.
The arrival of Higuain is intended to deal with the fact that Juventus have already lost Alvaro Morata to Real Madrid this summer, with the Spanish side activating a buy-back clause in the deal that took him to Turin in 2014.
Juventus are also likely to lose Paul Pogba this summer. Manchester United are expected to complete a £110m move for him before the season begins.
The signing of Higuain does not mean that Pogba is any more likely to move to Old Trafford. Juventus are wealthy by their own right and have funds to spend on the striker.
